Christmas Pt. 2: Christmas Day

Almost a week after the fact, I’ve finally decided to post about Christmas Day. We had quite a year this time. Lots of great gifts and lots of good food. Everyone had a great time. Also, this year had the distinction of being the first year that I remember where my parents woke me rather then the other way around.
But, let’s get right into it. The gifts. First thing I have to mention is my new, not to mention first, digital camera. I am the last person in the family to get a digital camera and I’ve been wanting one for a while now. So expect this site to become a lot more picture intensive. I’m really psyched. I’m already improving on my pictures.
I also got a number of DVDs (Sorry about the blur), a couple of comedy CDs, and a few books. (I even got one with no pictures!) I got the consol version of Lego Star Wars to make up for buying the crappy DS version. Not that I’ve had much opportunity to (play it.) I even got some cool LOST merchandise. I’ll be spending a whole year on the Island with my new calendar (A few months of interest: March, April, June, October.) and I can visit the Hatch any time I want with the Hatch diorama. If I get close enough to it, it looks like I’m actually there.
And last, but most certainly not least, Jared got me the dancing, singing Spider-man. Yeah, I know it’s a kid’s toy, but damn it, it’s cool.
All and all, it was a pretty good year if I may say so myself. It was quite a Christmas. Still, it’s kind of nice to have things going back to normal.

EDIT: Okay, everyone. The pics should be working now. My New Years resolution is to never write that much HTML code in the morning.

Nextwave: The End

Just learned that one of my favorite comics of ‘06, “Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E”, has officially been canceled and will end with issue 12. It really sucks, but it will supposedly live on in mini-series, which lessens my disappointment. Still, I’m going to miss my monthly dose of wackiness. As much as I enjoy the big, epic events like “Civil War”, it’s always nice to break up the bleakness with books like Nextwave. Issue #2 actually made me laugh so hard that I literally was crying. I even stole … I mean, borrowed the subtitle for this very blog (“It’s like Shakespeare … but with lots more punching!”) from the theme song released with issue #1. – I wonder if I should change it now…?

Oh, well. Perhaps this will free Warren Ellis up to write more issues of “Fell”. (Yeah, right.)

Christmas Pt. 1: Playing Santa

I know I haven’t posted in a while, but to bring you up to
speed, I’ve had the last four days off. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the
schedule. It’s like I got my own mini-Christmas break. It’s been really great.
I spent most of it just lounging around and relaxing, even though I did end up
going into work three of the four days. (Twice for movies and once for my pay
check.)

Today, however, I ventured out to “play Santa” to my
friends. That was a lot of fun. Jon was visiting his family in the afternoon,
so I stopped at his place first. I had a model of the Delorian from Back To The
Future II for Jon, a poster of “the Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” for Amy,
a car that makes siren noises for Cameron (with an E, lol.), and a
doll/back-pack set for Gabby. Everyone seemed pretty happy with their gifts,
but I think I found the kid’s reaction the most entertaining. I’m used to
giving gifts to calm, savvy young adults, so it was a lot of fun to see the
little one’s excitement. I think I did pretty good.

They, however, REALLY outdid themselves. After passing
everything out, I got to open what they got for me. I tore off the paper to
find the complete works of Edgar Alan Poe. It was one of those nice
leather-bound editions you see them selling at Barns & Nobel, so I was
quite impressed. So, we sit there and talk for a little while and, without even
really thinking about it, I started to flip through the pages. Or, at least,
that’s what I tried to do. I found that the majority of the pages were stuck
together. Only the cover and table of contented opened to reveal that the
center had been removed. This was no ordinary book! It was a home made book
safe! (The store-made ones are nowhere near as nice as this one, I must say.)
And, inside, I found a bookmark featuring a certain heroin addicted hobbit, a
One Ring like in Lord of the Rings/Clerks 2, and a 128MB jump drive. We all had
a good laugh and discussed how they expected me to take longer to notice. But,
yeah, I was blown away. The jump drive alone is just … awesome. Jon even loaded
some drawings and a cool paint program onto it to get me started. And I know
it’ll come in handy as I’m buying a used laptop off of one of my managers at
work. So, once again, thanks guys.

After that, I planned on driving over to Katie’s house. I
was about a block away before I remembered that I had promised to call her
first. So, I pulled over and gave her a ring. I’m glad I did, too, because she
informed me that she was, in fact, not at home but the hospital. The ICU, if I
recall correctly. She mentioned to me the other day that she had developed food
poisoning shortly after returning home from school, but it wasn’t getting
better as quickly as they expected, so her parents took her in just to have her
checked out. So, we agreed that’s she would give me a call later when she
returned home.

With Katie’s stop temporarily delayed, I went on to Comic
Town to pick up my weekly fix. Hung out there a little bit talking to DJ about
Wizard magazine and how it doesn’t cover comics quite as much as we’d like. I
learned that the folks at Comic Town were actually considering putting out a
magazine of their own. It would essentially be a list of everything they
received each week and an honest review of what they thought of what they read.
If a book was good, they’d tell you why you should check it out. If a book was
bad, they’d tell you exactly what was wrong with it. Best part is that the
magazine would most likely be free and automatically included for pull
customers. I told them that I thought it was a great idea. I can’t wait to see
if it works out.

I finally returned home and hung out with Mom and Jared for
a while. Later, as we were beginning to discuss dinner, Katie called and I ran
over to her house. That was really nice. We haven’t been keeping up as much as
we used to, so it was cool to just hang out and talk. I got her the “College
Humor Guide”, a book put out by College Humor.com , which I guess she’s a fan
of. (I didn’t know that, so it was a happy accident.) She got me “The Kill Bill
Diary” by David Carradine, AKA: Bill. It’s the actually diary David Carradine
kept during the shooting of one of my favorite movies. Very cool, can’t wait to
read it.

Then I went home, had dinner, and we made Christmas cookies.
Making and decorating cookies is a tradition we’ve had for as long as I
remember. We usually do it on the Eve, but I have to work tomorrow, so we went
ahead and did them this evening. It was a lot of fun and we made some very odd
ones. Most of them are your usual Christmas cookie cut-outs, but we always seem
to get board with them and start making unusual shapes by hand. For instance, I
made a replica of my “geek jacket”, with sprinkles for my patches, and the
symbol of the Dharma Initiative. Of course, they never come out looking as good
as we intend. The geek jacket cookie looks like what it would have been like
had I started sewing patches onto a parka instead of  a black hoody and the Dharma Initiative cookie is basically
unrecognizable unless you know what your looking for. Still, it’s the making
that’s fun.

And that’s just about it. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve. I have
to work, but we’re only running the first two sets, so I’ll be home early. They
may even let me go after starting the second set (instead of keeping me until
the end), so I may be home super early. That evening, we will go out and look
at lights. It should be very good this year. Just driving home from work, I’ve
seen a lot of good houses. Then we’ll come home and Dad will read “Twas the
Night Before Christmas” and then it’ll be off to bed so that “Santa will come”.
Jared and I will be up half of the night, of course. Another tradition that
goes back more-or-less our whole lives is that we sleep in the same room. I
can’t really remember how this started, but now that my room is on the opposite
end of the house, it ensures that no one sees anything before anyone else. Back
in the day, we would sleep in the same bed, but there comes an age were that’s
more creepy the cute. So, these days, I end up on the floor. Not the most
comfortable arrangement. It was perfect timing, too. When you’re young, you’re
too excited to sleep. As you grow older and become more mature, you’re better
able control you’re excitement and sleep better. It was at that point that I
started sleeping on the floor. So, I’m still not sleeping before Christmas just
like when I was little, simply for different reasons. But it shouldn’t be so
bad this year. To make room for the tree, we had to move one of the living room
chairs into Jared’s room and I’ll be sleeping in that.

It will most likely be Christmas before I post again. So,
until next time, I wish you all happy holidays and a very merry Christmas!

To Anyone With My Cell Phone Number…

Attention anyone with my cell-phone number. There is an extremely
good chance that it is no longer any good. My brother just informed me that I
forgot to take it out of my pocket earlier before putting my pants into the
wash. We’re still waiting for it to dry off and recharge, so there is a tiny
chance it will still work, but our hopes are not high. If it is destroyed, I’ll
probably replace it late this week. Stay tuned for updates. In the meantime, if
you need to contact me, your best bet is email.

It’s kind of crazy, though. I’ve been meaning to put more minutes on it for the past couple of days, but I’ve been putting it off. If I had put minutes on, say, yesterday though, I’d be out thirty bucks right now. So, hmm, act of God?

Update:
Yeah. My phone is fried. I’ll be picking up a replacement probably sometime on Wednesday or Thursday. I’ll try to have my new number out by the end of the week.

Pursuit of Happyness

Are you in the pursuit of happiness? Well, if you are, I’m
afraid you will find very little in the latest film staring Will Smith. “The
Pursuit of Happyness” (the misspelling is intentional and explained in the
movie.) is the story of a man in 1981 simply trying to make ends meet. After
investing his life’s savings into a doomed business, he finds himself
struggling to support his wife and son. Matters only get worse after his wife
walks out on him and their son. His last hope is to become an unpaid temp at a
stockbroker company in the faint hope that he just MIGHT get a job there.

This is a very depressing movie. For the whole two hours,
Smith can’t seem to find a single break. Just when things are starting to look
up, a world of problems comes crashing down. And, honestly, for me, it made the
movie just a little bit less enjoyable. I mean, I was rooting for the guy, no
question. I wanted to see him succeed. And I know the whole point of the movie
is to see him struggling against adversity. But the sorrow and misery is just
so unrelenting, I started to just feel really weighted down about half way
through. Also, at about the same time, I started to feel the movie drag a
little bit. There was a side plot about a hobo steeling from Smith and Smith
having to get it back that was revisited a few times. I don’t know. Part of me
wants to acknowledge that it was a good movie critically, but I just don’t
think I personally cared for it very much.

I do have to give high praise to the films two primary
stars. Will Smith and his real life son are both remarkable. I’m mostly
familiar with Will Smith’s lighter roles such as Men In Black and Independence
Day, but I had previously heard that he was really good in his weightier roles
like Ali, so I knew he could act. I was really impressed, though, with his
young son. There is an old adage in Hollywood that you never work with animals
or children and nine times out of then, I completely agree. Considering the
fact that my theatre gets every children’s movie we can get our hands on, I
have seen more then my fair share of awful child actors. Jaden Smith, however,
is the exception. He had that one quality that just about every other child
star I see lacks and that is subtlety. He was able to be cute without jumping
to that ‘kittens and babies’ level. He was able to be sad without bawling. And
when the other characters were interacting, you never felt that he was trying
to get the attention back onto himself. That being said, if you noticed, he
always had the appropriate reaction. It doesn’t sound like it should be that
big of a deal, but it was nice to see a young actor act the way a real child
would in these strenuous situations. My only issue would be that I wish the
movie focused on him just a little bit more.

So, over all, I guess I have to chalk this one up as a good
movie that I just couldn’t get into personally. Still, if your looking for a
movie about a man overcoming truly difficult circumstances, this one would be
right up your ally. However, if you have a history of depression, you might
want to sit it out.

Three out of Five.

WhatPulse

Do you spend a lot of time on the computer? Do you post in a blog? Do you chat or instant message? Have you ever wondered how much you actually type? If so, I know of a program you should check out.

A while ago, I discovered a site called “WhatPulse” that offers a program that counts your keystrokes and mouse clicks. Every so often, you can upload your numbers (or “Pulse”) and their web site will keep track of your stats and even rank you among it’s other users. Now, it may sound suspicious. Stuff like ‘spyware’ comes to mind. But I’ve had it for a while (a little over a year, actually.) and I can assure you that it’s completely safe and surprisingly interesting. Since Dec 10, 2005, as of my last Pulse, I have typed 3,690,332 keys and clicked my mouse 1,026,983 times. And it looks like they’ve started a ‘how far your mouse has traveled’, as well, but it’s been a while since I’ve updated so I haven’t used that yet.

Anyway, if anyone is interested, the site can be found at http://whatpulse.org/. Also, I’m starting a new team you should check out called “Brotherhood of Evil Geeks!” All are welcome to join, so check it out soon!

Santa Bless The Internet

I am just about done with Christmas shopping. As much as I dreaded it, I found it kind of funny how quickly and easily I completed the majority of my shopping. All that remains is my brother’s gift, which is just a matter of in-store pick-up at this point, (I love in-store pick-up. All the east of online shopping without the dreaded shipping and handling, which has really been killing me this year.) and my dad, for whom I still have no idea of what to do. I was even able to complete my list of friends, which I really thought would have to wait until later.

Now I’m just at the mercy of UPS and FedEx.
