Job Search Update: Things are looking UPS

So I applied for the job of package handler at UPS the other day. I went on a tour of the place yesterday and I had an interview today. I actually think it went well, though the whole thing in general was kind of weird. They actually had me filling out forms before the interview that you wouldn’t expect to fill out until after being hired. Stuff like tax info and an application to join the union. And then, even after all of that, they told me that they would have to get back to me with their answer. The guy told me that they had to do a background check first, which makes since, but then he’d also have to see if they were any openings.  The interview was weird, too. I guess they were all reasonable questions, but it seemed a bit much considering the job I was going for. “Where do you see yourself in five years.” For goodness sake, right now I’m just trying to carve out some time on Saturday to go to a party at a local Sci-Fi store. I’ve never been a five-year-plan kind of guy. “What are your goals and how can UPS help you achieve them?” Um, I’d like to make money. UPS can hire me and then start giving me money. There really seemed to be some miscommunication, too. “Why are you applying for Part-Time work?” Well, that’s all your website said was available.

So, yeah, it was very weird. That being said, the job looks awesome. I’m keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

On a related note, the guys at my current job now know that I’m looking. I was trying to keep all that on the DL because I honestly had no idea how they would react. I couldn’t avoid telling them this time, though, as both the tour and interview happened when I should have been at the theater. When I was asking if I could come in late, James guessed it and I wasn’t going to lie. Luckily for me, everyone has taken it well so far. Head projectionist Dan, who is a major reason I’ve been looking, is still on vacation, so I’m curious as to what his reaction will be. But, as I keep telling them, nothing is set in stone yet. I could hear back from UPS tomorrow, or it could still be months before I find something new that works. And we’ve even discussed the possibility of me coming in to help out part time, too, like in the summer. The joke is that I have to keep working just enough to get an Iron Man and Batman poster next summer.

Well, stay tuned for updates.

And like Magic, I’m an even bigger Geek!

I have absolutely no idea why, but my manager at work brought in his old collection of Magic: The Gathering cards the other day. I tried getting into Magic years ago when they were first hitting it big. I didn’t really have anyone to play it with, though, so I eventually lost interest. When I told James that I had long ago forgotten how to play, he decided that he would re-teach me. First, I have to say that it all came back to me a lot faster then I expected. I was absolutely dominated in our first game, but I actually crushed him in our second. Second, that was actually a lot of fun. I was even inspired to dig out some of my old collection. I’ve been going through it and I’m thinking I might try picking it up again. I know Comic Town has tournaments and such all the time. I wonder if they have any ‘beginner’ games.
